Lincoln & Grant in 1864: The Partnership that Saved the Union and Destroyed Slavery

November 7, 2024 6:00pm - John Grisham Room, Mitchell Memorial Library

Dr. Susannah Ural, the Frank and Virginia Williams Chair for Abraham Lincoln and Civil War Studies, will host the 2024 Williams Lecture, speaking with two of the nation's leading Civil War historians about the relationship between President Lincoln and Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in 1864 and how it helped to secure Union victory and destroy slavery. This year, our format has shifted from a traditional lecture to a conversation between scholars, allowing us to cover various topics relating to our theme. Our featured guests are Dr. Joan Waugh, a critically acclaimed historian of U.S. Grant and Civil War memory, and professor emeritus at U.C.L.A., and Dr. Joseph T. Glatthaar, a leading military historian of the U.S. Civil War era, is an award-winning author and the Stephenson Distinguished Professor and Adjunct Professor of the Curriculum in Peace, War and Defense at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Both guests have written extensively on the individuals, events, and key decisions featured in this final decisive year of the war.

Gates will be up for visitor parking, and a reception and book signing will follow the event.
