Best-selling author and President of the Ulysses S. Grant Association, Jim Bultema, will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2025 Marszalek Lecture Series. The event will take place on March 20 in the John Grisham Room of Mitchell Memorial Library.

Bultema’s presentation, titled “Ulysses S. Grant: A Photographic History,” will explore Grant’s life through imagery. Joining him is MSU History Department PhD student Heath Anderson, the recipient of the 2025 Marszalek Graduate Student Award. Anderson will present his lecture, “…‘Life is Not Held Sacred:’ Mississippi and the Election of 1875.”

In addition to the Marszalek Lecture Series, the MSU Libraries will host several other notable events this semester.

On February 14, MSU Libraries will participate in the national Douglass Day celebration. This annual transcribe-a-thon marks Frederick Douglass’s birthday and invites participants to help transcribe historical documents from the Library of Congress. The event will take place in the second-floor atrium, where laptops and all necessary materials will be provided.

Other upcoming events include:

• “Unknown Women in Mississippi History,” a lecture by Professor LaWanda Dickens from Jackson State University on March 3.

• “A Conversation with Dr. Flonzie Brown Wright” on March 31.
