Basic Concepts in Forest Valuation and Investment Analysis

Bullard, Steven H.
Publisher: G T R Printing & Publishing
Second Edition,1998
ISBN: 0964129116
Collaborators: Thomas J. Straka

This book contains all the financial formulas a grower needs when she is ready to sit down in front of the computer and analyze the finances of a forestry project. It is clearly written and full of examples but not light reading. Written by two professors, it would work well as a textbook for a forest economics course. Topics covered begin with basic principles of compound interest and then move on to financial criteria for evaluating forestry projects such as Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return, using financial criteria to determine optimal rotation ages, analyzing silvicultural practices such as pruning and fertilization. Final chapters cover taxes and computer programs. "Basic Concepts" is broader in scope but similar in tone to "Essentials of Forestry Investment Analysis" by Haney and Gunter, the manual used in the series of forestry economics seminars given by Harry Haney in Hawai'i in 1996.

Basic Concepts in Forest Valuation and Investment Analysis

Bullard, Steven H.
Publisher: Mississippi State, Distributed by GTR Printing
1993
ISBN: 0964129108

Basic Concepts in Forest Valuation and Investment Analysis is a reference workbook by Dr. Steven H. Bullard, a professor in the Department of Forestry at Mississippi State University, and Dr. Thomas J. Straka, a professor in the Department of Forest Resources at Clemson University. The workbook is published and distributed through Preceda Education and Training in Auburn, Alabama. The book is a "how to" manual or guide to forest valuation and forestry investment analysis, with practical, "real world" examples. The book has ten sections, including the basics of compound interest and financial criteria, inflation, taxes, forest valuation, and computer programs. Applications include how to project stumpage prices, how to choose a guiding interest rate, and how to account for inflation and taxes in evaluating forestry investments. The book's many examples include evaluating pruning, herbicides, fertilization, and other intensive management practices. For appraisers and investors, the book includes a full section on estimating the value of land and timber - including the valuation of precommercial stands of timber. Many states in the U.S. have a written exam to qualify to become a Registered Forester; Basic Concepts in Forest Valuation and Investment Analysis has a 100-page section titled "Review for the Registered Forester Exam." The workbook is used as a text in undergraduate forest economics courses around the nation. The book is also widely used as a reference in continuing education courses for practicing professional foresters.
