Belief is better than anything else, Frost said. The reader will find a credible belief in art and song in Fleur Carnivore: in eye conjoining ear, in the "cardina's lunatic blow"---belief without piety or the usual poetic cant, without fashion, expressed in an idiom that Richard Lyons has not so much invented as lived. In this book of brutal amazements the self servives its desires and its equally insatiable losses through multiplicity, each melody line rough with experience and jazzed up and forward by all its dead and living players. "Each of us must remain each," this poet says: yet in his fleet hands our solitudes have never seemed so mutual, or risen so far above dull expectations. This is a stunning collection.
