John M. Usher received his Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences at Louisiana State University in 1989. He also holds graduate degrees in both Chemical and Industrial Engineering from LSU, and a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida. Prior to his academic career, John worked with Texas Instruments in the area of process development for the manufacture of multi-layer printed circuit boards. In addition to this industrial experience, John has also participated in summer research programs working with Martin Marietta (Oak Ridge, TN), NASA (Huntsville, AL), and the US Air Force (Dayton, Ohio).

His research interests focus on employing artificial intelligence in software environments for the purpose of enhancing system operation. John also teaches and consults in the area of applications software development including database design and development.

He has published numerous papers in technical journals and conference proceedings, edited several books, and continues to serve on the editorial staff of Concurrent Engineering: Research and Applications. John is a registered professional engineer in Mississippi and a senior member of IIE, SME, and AAAI.
