Charles Pittman has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Lafayette College and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Pennsylvania State University. He completed postdoctoral studies with G. A. Olah, and served on active duty at the U.S. Army Solid Propulsion Laboratory. In 1967, he joined the faculty at the University of Alabama. He was appointed Full Professor in 1975 and University Research Professor in 1977.

Dr. Pittman came to Mississippi State in 1983 as Professor of Industrial Chemistry and Catalysis. He is also Research Director of the University/Industry Chemical Research Center. He has published over 460 research papers, chapters and patents; presented over 395 invited lectures; and has been supported by NSF, ARO, ONR, PRF and numerous private sources. For 10 years, he was editor of the Journal of Molecular Catalysis. He is a contributing editor to Polymer News and has been on the editorial boards of Journal of Macromolecular Science, Inorganic Chimica Acta, Reactive Polymers and Journal of Inorganic and Organometallic Polymers.

Metal-containing polymeric materials now represent a major niche area within polymer science. This topic, once a curiosity among polymer scientists, owes its growth to the explosive development of organometallic chemistry since the early 1960s. The huge increase in knowledge concerning the chemistry of main group metals, transition metals and lanthanide/actinide metals has been followed by a variety of applications and mergers of these chemistries with polymer science. In the 1960s and early 1970s vinyl ferrocene and other polymerizable ferrocene derivatives were incorporated into polymers as a direct outgrowth of the rapidly developing field of organometallic chemistry of pi-complexed transition metal systems. Likewise, the expansion of metal cluster chemistry was followed by incorporation of metal clusters into polymers. Silicon chemistry advances led directly to polysilanes and two-dimensional sheet systems involving silicon. Inorganic ceramic chemistry advances spurred research on metal-containing fiber development for preceramic applications. Current explosive growth in materials science, optical properties, catalysis, three-dimensional networks, etc. are fueling interesting mergers of organometallic, inorganic, and polymer chemistry. In order to follow and emphasize these trends, the editors organized the "International Symposium on Metal-Containing Polymeric Materials" at the 208th National American Chemical Society Meeting in Washington, DC, August 2025, 1994. Following the symposium selected authors were asked to prepare chapters both introducing and summarizing their work for this book. This was the sixth such symposia which we organized. The previous symposia were in 1977, 1979, 1983, 1987 and 1989 four of which were subsequently published in book form. This and the earlier books provide a glimpse of the field's evolution.

As one would expect from a field of study involving polymer science, materials chemistry, organometallic and inorganic chemistry, catalysis, and biochemical concepts, metal-containing polymers has become a highly interdisciplinary topic. This becomes apparent simply looking at the chapter titles. Scientists from around the world have contributed discussions of topics ranging from structure and functioning of metalloenzymes, shish kabob polymers with metals along the spine, preceramic polymers, metal-cluster containing materials, mixed-metal polymers, polymer-bound Ziegler Natta catalysts, polymer precursors for conducting and ferromagnetic materials, synthesis of three-dimensional cage and channel networks, plant growth regulators, novel polyelectrolytes, metallized polyimides to novel photonic materials. Synthetic methodologies such as ring-opening polymerization of strained metallocenophanes, liquid crystalline transition metal-containing polymers, thermosetting systems, vinyl polymers, coordination polymers condensation polymerization and oxidative polymerizations have been applied to metal-containing polymers and all these topics represented herein.

There was no 'best' way in which to organize this text. The method selected was to follow the introductory overview chapter with six major thematic divisions. Synthesis and characterization of new systems was the first theme. Ten chapters fall into this general classification. This is followed by a section containing seven chapters on silicon-containing polymers, preceramic systems, 3-D cages and networks. Then eight chapters have been grouped under the theme: electrical, magnetic, photonic, and ion-exchange properties. This is followed by the sections: polyelectrolytes and ion-binding systems (four chapters) and one chapter on mass spectroscopy. The final section of the text covers biopolymers and their structure, function, and reactivity relationships (three chapters). One chapter is a major review by G. B. Jameson on transition metal-containing biopolymers and models.

In closing, I would like to acknowledge the special efforts of John E. Sheats of Rider University who is mainly responsible for the introductory chapter. I also want to thank Donna P. Murrah who played a major role in the clerical and technical aspects of bringing the text together. She also played a pivotal role in composing the subject index. Research on metal-containing polymers began in the early 1960's when several workers found that vinyl ferrocene and other vinylic transition metal pi-complexes would undergo polymerization under the same conditions as conventional organic monomers to form high polymers which incorporated a potentially reactive metal as an integral part of the polymer structures. Some of these materials could act as semiconductors and possessed one or two dimensional conductivity. Thus applications in electronics could be visualized immediately. Other workers found that reactions used to make simple metal chelates could be used to prepare polymers if the ligands were designed properly. As interest in homogeneous catalysts developed in the late 60's and early 70's, several investigators began binding homogeneous catalysts onto polymers, where the advantage of homogeneous catalysis - known reaction mechanisms and the advantage of heterogeneous catalysis - simplicity and ease of recovery of catalysts could both be obtained. Indeed the polymer matrix itself often enhanced the selectivity of the catalyst.

The first symposium on Organometallic Polymers, held at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in September 1977, attracted a large number of scientists interested in this field, both established investigators and newcomers. Subsequent symposia in 1977, 1979, 1983, and 1987 have seen the field mature. Hundreds of papers and patents have been published. Applications of these materials as semiconductors and one-dimensional conductors, as radiation shields or as photo-resists, as catalysts, as controlled release agents for drugs and biocides and a wide variety of applications have been studied (see Chapter 1).

This book is an expanded version of the papers presented at the Symposium on Inorganic and Organometallic Polymers at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Miami Beach in September 1989. It is designed to give the reader an introduction to the wide varieties of structures that can be created and the many novel applications that can arise when traditional polymer science, involving primarily compounds of C, H, N, O, S, Si and the halogens is combined with the rest of the periodic table. Three review chapters give an overview of the entire field in the United States, Japan, and Western Europe (Chapter 1), the Soviet Union (Chapter 2), and the People's Republic of China (Chapter 3). Topics such as conductive polymers (Chapters 4,5,6),coordination polymers (Chapter 10), condensation polymers (Chapters 17-21), polyphosphazenes (Chapter 16), carborane siloxanes (Chapter 14), polymer bound catalysts (Chapters 3 and 6), and biopolymers (Chapters 19-20) have been covered in previous monographs cited in Chapter 1. Two new fields, pre-ceramic polymers and polysilanes have emerged since publication of our previous monograph in 1985. Polysilanes (Chapters 13 and 15) had been long sought after but were considered not to be stable. The first example of this class of compounds was reported in 1984. At the fall 1990 ACS meeting, there were 143 papers on these materials. Pre-ceramlc materials (Chapters 11-12) have emerged as a means of taking soluble, tractable polymeric materials which can be spun into fibers, woven into fabrics, cast into films, or fabricated into various shapes and pyrolyzing them to form inorganic materials such as metal oxides, carbides, nitrides, sulfides, or selenides which retain their original shape or else become highly porous, permitting their possible applications as catalysts. The discovery of "high temperature" superconductors in 1986 has given a further impetus to this field.

In summary, the possibilities for research and for new useful materials is as diverse as properties of the elements these materials contain. It is exciting to anticipate how this field will continue to develop in the coming years.

We have been happy to be a part of the development of this field and are looking forward to seeing exciting new developments in the next few years.

This book, Advances in Organometallic and Inorganic Polymer Science, contains chapters selected by the editors to give an overview of much of the research being conducted in the field of organometallic polymers, as it is today and where it is going. Each of the five sections--General, New Procedures and Techniques, Electrically Conducting Polymers, Polymer-bound Catalysts and Phosphonitriles--includes one or more reviews. The reviewers are both experts within the area reviewed and are actively researching within the area. Authors were encouraged to indicate not only the present "state-of-the-art" as regards the particular area, but also to note areas in need of research, projected future trends, and actual and potential applications (industrial, other areas of science) of their topic areas. Thus the reviews are more than typical serial reviews and are considerably more valuable and longer lasting in potential value to the scientific community.

"Polymetallocenylenes - Recent Developments" by E. Neuse details recent progress in the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of polyferrocene and polyruthenocene including potential applications. This is an update of the Neuse and Rosenberg book Metallocene Polymers (Marcel Dekker, Inc., N.Y., 1970). "Polymers for Controlled Release of Organotin Toxin" by Subramanian and Somasekharan describes efforts at the synthesis of polymers which simultaneously provide long-term fouling resistance and useful engineering properties. Elements affecting the reactivity and dynamic mechanical behavior are discussed and the reactivity results fitted to mathematical models. Taylor and St. Clair reviewed the "Incorporation of Metal Related Materials into Electrically Neutral Polymers" including addition of metals as a metal atom vapor, organometallic compounds, coordination complexes and simple hydrated or anhydrous salts. Property - metal nature interrelationships are discussed, including polymer flammability and electrical conductivity.

The application of the technique of trimethylsilylation to mineral silicates is reviewed by B. Currell and J. Parsonage. Discussed are attempts to prepare new polyorganosiloxane materials from wholly "natural" feedstocks. The "Metal Vapor Synthesis of Organometal Polymers and Polymer-Supported Metal Clusters," an area receiving much recent coverage, is reviewed by C. Francis and G. Ozin. A new technique for identification of thermal degradation products using coupled thermogravimetric analysis and mass spectroscopy is described in detail by Carraher, Molloy, Tiernan, Taylor, and Schroeder. The procedure is applicable to a wide range of analyses including oil shale use studies and the thermal degradation of transportation vehicle interiors.

The enormous potentiality offered by polymer/metal complexes in catalysis is reviewed by C. Carlini and G. Sbrana. Included are discussions relating catalytic activity and selectivity to binding site, nature of the metal, and correlation with mechanism.

Additional monographs are planned at regular intervals to keep the reader abreast of new developments. Another major symposium is planned for 1983. We anticipate continued, exciting new developments in this field.

Organometallic Polymers is a volume designed to cover a wide range of topics related to organometallic polymers: their synthesis, characterization, and potential applications. For the purpose of this volume we have defined an organometallic polymer as one in which the metal-containing portion is either incorporated as an integral part of the polymer or is bound to the polymer structure by covalent bonds. Some of the materials such as the phosphonitriles and sulfur nitride polymers might be classed as inorganic rather than organometallic polymers, but are included because of their close relationship to the other types of polymers discussed.

The chapters in this volume were written by the speakers at the three-day Symposium on Organometallic Polymers, held at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans, on March 20-23, 1977. The authors are recognized experts within their areas of research. Most are American but some contributions from abroad have been included. There is a mix of industrial and academic authors and a mixture of basic, theoretical, and applied research topics. The volume is divided into seven sections: vinyl polymerization of organometallic monomers, condensation polymerization of organometallic monomers, polymer-bound catalysts, applications of organotin polymers, recent developments in organosilicon polymers, phosphonitrile and sulfur nitride polymers, and coordination polymers. Each section includes one or more summary or review papers, which covers progress in the field, and includes several other papers presenting various aspects of the topic. Of the polymeric materials described only two classes, the organosilicons and the polymer-bound chromocene catalysts, have widespread commercial uses. Other materials, such as the organotin polymers, the phosphonitriles, and some of the hydroformylation catalysts, seem certain to be used widely within a few years. The others at present remain laboratory curiosities and subjects of an increasing amount of research. Potential applications include use as adhesives, antifouling paint, bacteriacides, biopolymers, catalysts, conductors, controlled-release agents, fibers, flame retardants, fungicides, haptens, implants in living tissue, paints, photo sensitizers, photostabilizers, photoresists, semiconductors, and stereospecific catalysts. Instrumental techniques for characterizing materials such as Mossbauer spectroscopy, photoacoustic spectroscopy, torsional braid analysis, thallium NMR, and X-ray crystallography are described. Considering the enormous impact the plastics and polymers formed from carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, silicon, and the halogens have already had on society, much more awaits the inclusion of the rest of the periodic table. In this volume polymers containing 26 other elements are described. Another symposium on the same topic is planned for 1980. We hope to have many more exciting results in the field by then.
