and independence in the library.
Objectives:
1. The students will identify the sections
of the library.
2. The students will demonstrate their
knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System by
successfully locating a list of call
numbers and titles.
3. The students will demonstrate their
knowledge and independence by going on a
scavenger hunt in the library. The librarian and the students will develop
a rubric
that will be used by each student to
evaluate his/her findings.

Duration
of Activity: 4 days
Activity:
The
librarian will introduce the library skills unit. She will walk through each section of the library. The librarian will walk the students through
the non-fiction section and verbally and visually explain the Dewey Decimal
numbers. She will then give each student
an index card with a list of call numbers and titles with instructions to go to
the shelves and locate. The librarian
will introduce the scavenger hunt to the students explaining what is
required. She will then give each
student a card with the items, books, rubric, and instructions.
Explore
Activity:
Students
go to MAGNOLIA site. Once there, each
student clicks on "EPSCO Host" and "Academic Search
Elite." Students must type in
"Dewey Decimal Classification System." Students click on "Dewey Made Fun" in HTML Full
Text. Once there, students click on to http://www.thrall.org/dewey
to "Do The Dewey Game."
Students can read the article about Dewey. They can also click on to "Cyber Dewey" to help them
find books. Give each student their own
assignment and ask them to find section using sheet. For example, ask student to list all categories under Division
300, etc. Each student has their own
assignment.
Formal
Assessment:
The
librarian will question and record. The
librarian will record the number of books on the list that the student
successfully found. The librarian and
the students will use the rubric to evaluate each student's performance.
