Instructional Format:            Use MAGNOLIA and Word individually

Prior Preparation:               Have questions formulated through MAGNOLIA searches

Materials Needed:                     

Internet access

MAGNOLIA

Computer printer and paper

Word

Duration of Activity:                      One class period, 60-90 minutes

Activity:

Distribute "Library Orientation" hand-out

Students copy and paste to Word document, answer questions, and print.

Explore Activity:

Have students go to EBSCO Host.  Under "Find," have students type in "Rowling."

Students will scroll down to #2 "Harry Potter Fever Sweeps the Nation" by Junior Scholastic.  Allow students to create a one-page typed outline, double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman, summarizing the abstract.  Give students an example of an outline format.  Their outline should resemble something like this:

            A.            Captivated by kids and adults

            B.            J. K. Rowling, author, nervous but pleased about film

I.          From the desktop on the computer, go to the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).

            a.            Do a KEYWORD search about Harry Potter.

            b.            Select the book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

            c.            Click on the Electronic Access, Internet sites about schools--Fiction.

            d.            Click on the Harry Potter Internet site.

e.         Write down the title of the Potter book about Year #3 at "Hogwarts School."

f.          Close that site.

 

II.         Still in OPAC, select "Search" and choose "Events."  Write down the date of our

            Staff Development holiday in October.

 

III.       Still in OPAC, do an author search for Rowling, J. K.  How many book titles by

            her name does this library own?

 

IV.       Write down the "Call Number" for her books.

 

V.        Close OPAC.  From Desktop, select EXPLORER to go to the Internet.  Write

            three things from our library homepage that will help you with homework.

 

 

 

VI.       Select MAGNOLIA magazines.  Click on EBSCOhost (upper left corner). 

            Scroll down and check the box for MasterFILE Premier.  Scroll to bottom of

            page and click "Continue."  Type "Shelby Thames" in the search box.  Click on

            "Full Text" box.  Click "Search."  Who is Shelby Thames?  Write below.
