02/06/2008: Major Improvements to Wilson Biographies Plus Illustrated

Major improvements were recently made to Wilson Biographies Plus Illustrated, including a new frameless interface for faster loading, clearer screens, and quick links to recent articles and author criticisms. A one-page flyer explaining the enhancements is available at: http://www.hwwilson.com/wbiosCX.pdf.

In addition, Facts About the Presidents and Speeches of the American Presidents have been added. Facts About the Presidents delivers information about the lives, backgrounds, and terms in office of every American president: George Washington to George W. Bush, plus facts about the Executive Office itself. In addition to data on the presidents' backgrounds, lifes and administrations, statistics are included allowing a researcher to compare presidents on the basis of such matters as early occupation, previous political career, type of education, military experience, family background, religious affiliation, literary output, and age at death.

Speeches of the American Presidents includes more than 200 major speeches by the 43 U.S. presidents, from Washington through George W. Bush. With the publication of the Second Edition, 25 new speeches have been added; covering the end of Ronald Reagan's second term, the presidencies of George Bush and Bill Clinton, and the inauguration of George W. Bush. Chapters devoted to each chief executive are introduced by a brief discussion of his career, including the decisive events of his administration. The speaking style of each president is described, and his use of public address as an instrument of power is evaluated. Each speech is prefaced by a description of the date, place, and circumstances of its composition and delivery.

11/6/2007: Greetings from MAGNOLIA!

As you know, MAGNOLIA had some extra funding to purchase additional databases. The Selection Committee was charged with reviewing databases and making a recommendation to the Steering Committee. After watching 10 presentation and a lengthy discussion, the recommendation was that we purchase Credo Reference Unlimited and Wilson Biographies Plus Illustrated. This was accepted by the MAGNOLIA Steering Committee.

The vendors and MSU finished the setup of the databases and accounts. We have added these two resources to the MAGNOLIA K-12 and the MAGNOLIA Public Library/Community College websites. The access information for Universities was sent to the library director.

We hope that you enjoy using these additional resources. The committee worked very hard to ensure we had access to resources that were applicable to multi-type institutions. A special thanks to the committee members for their hard work!

To learn how to use Wilson Biographies, please view the online tutorial.

Why recreate the wheel? Here are lesson plans to help teachers meet required standards while utilizing the valuable electronic resources available in the library.

1/19/2007 :Scavenger Hunts using Searchasuarus and MAGNOLIA!

To coincide with the revamping of Searchasaurus, Customer Success has created two scavenger hunts for the k-12 products Searchasaurus and Kids Search, which promote K-8 information literacy skills related to EBSCO databases. Both have corresponding answer keys, and the documents are available via the EBSCO Publishing Customer Success Center and the EBSCO Support Site.

4/19/2006:

The MAGNOLIA Steering Committee is very pleased to announce that it has decided to accept a proposal from EBSCO that allows us to upgrade our EBSCO package of databases. This upgrade provides us with 28 additional databases that will enhance the MAGNOLIA statewide network. Some of the databases included in the package are: Business Source Complete, History Reference Center, Literary Reference Center, Consumer Health Complete, MAS Ultra: School Edition, Hospitality & Tourism Complete, TOPICsearch , and many others. For a complete listing of databases, see the following web site: http://library.msstate.edu/content/templates/?a=1062&z=5

The Steering Committee reviewed the proposal and decided to accept it due to the breadth and scope of the databases that would be included in the package.

Unfortunately, in order to afford this proposal from EBSCO - we will not be renewing our subscription to the following databases: SIRS, Gale products and Wilson Biographies. Much of the content found in these databases can be found in the new databases provided by EBSCO. We will continue to have access to these databases until late summer. As a part of our agreement with EBSCO - they will be assisting us providing training around the state.

We have access to the databases through a trial website - see the website listed above. Once the agreement is signed, we will have access to the databases in this package. We also want you to be aware of the fact that the Legislature provided MAGNOLIA with an additional $100,000 to cover the cost of the Academic Search Premier upgrade (ASP). As you know, for the last 3 years many libraries across the state contributed funds to purchase the Academic Search Premier database. Libraries will not have to contribute funding to the ASP upgrade for FY 2006/2007.

This page has been designed to make it easier for the k-12 school libraries to access the MAGNOLIA products.

The lessons plans for the MAGNOLIA databases are available here.

If you have other suggestions on how we can make it easier for you to use these databases, please let us know.

If you would like to use the MAGNOLIA databases from home, simply click on the "Access resources from your home computer" link, located in the column to the right, and input your local EBSCOHost location ID when prompted.
