The author obtained his undergraduate degree in Marine Biology from the University of South Carolina and graduate degrees from the College of William and Mary (M.S., Biology) and North Carolina State University (Ph.D., Physiology). He then received a two-year post-doctoral fellowship for work in the Genetics Unit of the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory. He is currently a professor in the Poultry Science Department at Mississippi State University. In addition to research responsibilities, he teaches introductory and upper-level courses in genetics. He has developed the workbook entitled, Study Guide for Introductory Genetics to serve as an instructional aid in the introductory level course.
