Scope and Contents

The Baskin family papers are organized into four series: Correspondence, Financial and Legal Records, Miscellaneous, and Visual Materials.

Correspondence includes letters between Baskin family and friends from 1869 to 1948, with the bulk dating from 1896 to 1940.

Financial and Legal Records, 1869-1948 and undated, include bills, tax records, and deeds of trust.

The Miscellaneous series consists of published and ephemeral materials collected by the family, including: news clippings (1924-1925 and undated); Ku Klux Klan propaganda (1920-1922); World War II ration books (undated); Where the War Money Went (circa 1919); political speeches, pamphlets, and campaign materials (1911-1919 and undated); advertisements, circular letters, and coupons from creameries, general stores, and other businesses (1893-1943 and undated); religious materials such as offering cards and reports (1941-1943 and undated); agricultural bulletins, pamphlets, and other documents, many related to dairy farming (1890-1944 and undated); medical prescriptions, letters, and advertisements (1901-1943 and undated); miscellaneous notepads and calendars (1901-1916 and undated); and educational materials which include schoolwork, bulletins, grade reports, a French Camp booklet, and a 1913 issue of ‘Our Little Folks’ (1910-1936 and undated).

Visual Materials include postcards sent as correspondence, as well as a group of souvenir postcards from San Angelo, Texas (postmarked 1931). Photographs on the postcards include a squad drill at Camp Pike in Little Rock, Arkansas (1918); a depot in West, Mississippi (1909); a depot in Burdette, Mississippi (1927); and the Grand Boulevard in Greenwood, Mississippi (1948). Other postcards feature miscellaneous artwork, including holiday postcards and “A bunch of daisies,” a caricature of four African-American girls or women (undated).
