Historical Note

In 1911, the Mississippi Legislature passed a bill that provided appropriations for Home Demonstration Agents. Under the leadership of Susie Powell, Home Demonstration Club and Tomato Club work began. Early work included establishing local home demonstration clubs and hosting short courses on sewing and food preparation. The Smith-Lever Act of 1914 provided more funds for cooperative extension work in home demonstration. By 1917, Mississippi hired its first African American Home Demonstration Agent, Alice Oliver. She helped established African American clubs throughout the state. Club work progressed during the 1920s and club women continued to attend local and state meetings. During the Great Depression, Home Demonstration leaders such as May Cresswell contributed to improving the conditions of many rural families. These leaders focused on teaching food preparation and hygiene techniques to the communities. A few Home Demonstration women worked in a Federal Emergency Relief Administration Meat Canning Plant. When the United States entered World War II, Home Demonstration Club women encouraged young women to join the Women’s Land Army. Furthermore, the local clubs promoted democracy at home. After the war, Home Demonstration Clubs planned for the post-war transition and studied new organizations, such as the United Nations.
